‘L’ete a Paris’ by Jules Janin, 1843. (Shelf mark: 10172G23, by permission of The British Library)

Our Opera Glasses provide a unique and special service to theatre-goers. They help to bring the audience closer to the actors, facilitating a greater sense of intimacy and making the theatre experience that much more special.

History of Opera Glasses

Opera glasses have been a visible part of theatre-life since the early 1800s.

As well as being advertised for loan in theatre playbills in the second quarter of the 19th century, the term 'Opera Glass' was used 'as the title for no fewer that four theatrical and musical periodicals' (The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, Columbia University, 1992).

It is no coincidence that nearly two hundred years later (2003) English Heritage have chosen an image of our opera glasses for the front page of their photographic celebration, Scene/Unseen: London's West End Theatres, and we also adorn the back cover of The London Theatre Guide (2003).

'Scene/Unseen: London's West End Theatres' is available at the Theatre Museum's shop situated on Russell Street, Covent Garden. Tel. 020 7943 4700.
